Nanotechnology is a multidisciplinary field of science that studies properties and phenomena in the nanoscale (i.e. in the scale of a few nanometers) and evaluates the results for technology applications. It derives from the words "nano", which means very small, and "technology", which is the application of scientific knowledge to produce beneficial practical results. Essentially, it comprises two fields:

  • Nanoscience: is the field of science that studies the laws that govern the phenomena taking place in the nanoscale.
  • Nanotechnology: is the innovative practical applications that emerge from handling nanomaterials, through knowledge and understanding of these laws.

The concept was first proposed by Richard Feynman in 1959, in his talk "There's Plenty of Room at the Bottom".
